This small hill, overlooking a Oaxaca City suburb, was once the capital of the Zapotec. Known for their complex religious traditions, they built colossal temples called 'Yo Hopee', or 'Houses of Vital Force'. In these temples, they worshipped various deities, including Cocijo, the god of lightning and Piato Pezelao, the god of love and excess.
The Zapotec are still here today and form a large indigenous community in Oaxaca, though their old gods lie forgotten after the adoption of Christianity.
