Hanging Temple of Hengshan, China

Clinging to a sheer cliff face near Mount Heng, boldly defying the rules of gravity, is the Hanging monastery of Hengshan.

This holy place is said to be of truly ancient origins, perhaps more than 1500 years old.

Behind the façade of the temple is a labyrinth of 40 rooms carved into the rock, the most notable being of the Hall of Three Religions containing statues enshrining Buddhist, Daoist and Confucianist holy men.
