Yungang Grottoes, China

Enclosed in the Yungang Grottoes are over 51,000 statues.

This is one of the most important examples of Buddhist cave art in the world.

Built between the 5th and 6th Centuries AD, the grottoes were meant to reflect the deep piety of their builders, emperors of the Northern Wei, who adopted Buddhism as their state religion.
