Xi'an City Wall China, Silk Road

The towering walls surrounding the old city of Xi'an were built by Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang in the 12th century and are some of China's most complete ancient walls.

They are truly forbidding, rising up 40 ft (12m), with large sloping ramparts, watchtowers and parapets adding to their defensive capabilities.

They were also constructed with a walkway wide enough to ride chariots along, and this tradition continues today in a somewhat altered way;, as it is now a popular cycle route for locals.
