China has a six-thousand-year history, and not much here has been done for the first time.
An exception to this is the Wuwei Desert Sculpture Park, proudly touted as China's first desert-based museum.
The stark and bare landscape of the Tengger Desert creates a surreal backdrop for the hundreds of sculptures scattered across a vast area and is best explored on camelback.
On special occasions, the park is opened at night, and light displays around the sculptures create oases of colour in the otherwise pure black desert night.
