Surfing was introduced to Australia in Sydney when the Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku rode some gnarly kahunas just off Freshwater Beach.
Since then, the sport has blossomed into something just short of a religion, and a great wellspring of fun, friendship and culture for Australians.
NSW's surf culture is characterised by its friendliness and deep commitment to environmentalism, with many of the local sustainability initiatives (such as the Surfrider Foundation) being spearheaded by Aussie beachbums.
