Visiting the Flaming Mountains is a great way to get a feel of what it would have been like to cross the Silk Road in a camel caravan.
This dramatic pass in the desert near Turpan takes its name from the infernal red colour the sandstone turns underneath the desert sun, as well as the strange shapes of the mountain's rock formation, which look like tongues of flame.
