The Behistun Inscription, Silk Road

The Behistun inscription was ordered to be carved on this rockface by the Persian Emperor Darius I 521 BCE.  It depicts a larger-than-life Darius, with the Persian god Ahura-Mazda floating above, facing captive foreign rulers, their necks tied.

This was a statement of power, carved high above one of the busy roads that connected the Persian’s realm – a reminder to every traveller who was in charge in these parts.
